5 Best Places to ‘Wine Down’ in Houston

July 15, 2017 by HLH Staff Leave a Comment

Countless memes depict it, commercials target it, and advertisers bank on it— that’s right, we are talking about wine lovers in all their glory.

Wine, rightfully named as it usually comes after an eventful day of work or wrangling your children or home, is used to make life less stressful and days less long. The Europeans have drank it for centuries and it is a staple at any Sicilian home— and for thousands in America the glass (or two) of the liquid is sought after for a moment of peace.

In the hectic city life of Houston this is no exception. Many seek places to convene and converse with friends, family, and loved ones over a glass of wine and quaint appetizers or full-course meals. Some may color themselves as connoisseurs and seek world-renowned flavors, while others are more low-key and need nothing more than the best an establishment offers.  So where are the best places to find the best of both worlds?

13 Celsius

Let’s start out with one of the cutest shops around—based in central Houston in midtown. This wine dive is situated on the block of Caroline and was once a cleaner’s shop now turned wine divine. What many frequenter find the most satisfying about the place is that it mixes the European feel of a café for stellar prices. Imported wines from around the world chilled at the best temperature—13 degrees C are served up, and most of the time can be found for ½ off in their special bins that are situated at the bar. This makes all patrons happy as they can treat themselves and find a new worldly flavor and not break the bank. If you are hungry, they also serve Mediterranean style appetizers and snacks such as hummus and cheese platters. They prove that 13 degrees C is not just the perfect temperature for wine but for hangouts and date nights.

Max’s Wine Dive

If you are into more of an industrial look with an eclectic vibe look no further than Max’s Wine Dive. This place is a great hangout for those that are seeking a wide array of wine selections and unique treats. Not the biggest wine fan? Don’t worry they have other drink specialties on the menu and their brunch menu is to die for! Carafes of mimosas and choices of breakfast classics or a new favorite like red-velvet pancakes is what makes this place so packed on a weekend morning or during an evening bustle.

Boheme

Who can hate the casual and laidback bohemian lifestyle? Boheme, a Montrose based bar and lounge makes this lifestyle seem easy with their mood setting music, retro décor, and awesome menu. If you are a true pet lover then you know how hard it is to find a place to enjoy a drink with your favorite pup by your side, but the Boheme lounge has no issue with four-legged friends and welcomes them into their abode. The menu is diverse and offers a variety of drink options, including wine. What most people love the most is the friendly staff and atmosphere. Bring your friends or make some new ones at this trendy location.

The Tasting Room

Ah the Tasting Room! Refreshing and available in two major areas of Houston—CityCentre and Uptown Park. This dive offers a diverse menu of wines, flatbreads, appetizers, meats and snacks. In each location the atmosphere differs— the Uptown location is abuzz with professionals and local patrons who enjoy their wine in several different rooms or outside on the patio. The CityCentre location offers a larger space for gathering and music provided by local artists. Wherever you are located in the city there is sure to be a Tasting Room not too far as it continues to flourish. Make sure to check out their famous happy hour!

Ibiza

What can we say about Ibiza that has not already been said in countless reviews by their attendees—the food and atmosphere is phenomenal! Although each meal and drink item may be a bit pricey, this place is the place to go for special occasions and date nights. Chef-prepared meals can be viewed while you sit and enjoy your company and if you are unsure of how diverse their wine selection is then just view the giant wall of available bottles.  Ibiza may be at the bottom of this list but that is not to say it’s not one of the very best—visit on your next special outing.
